(North County Beat) – Del Mar’s Opening Day is set to break tradition this year with a Saturday start, marking a significant shift from its typical weekday kickoff. Scheduled for July 20th, this departure from the norm has sparked anticipation among seasoned revelers and newcomers alike, promising a vibrant launch to the summer season unlike any other in recent memory.

The decision to alter the opening day schedule stems from logistical considerations linked to the conclusion of the San Diego County Fair on July 7th, held at the same venue. Officials cited the need for sufficient turnaround time to prepare the Del Mar racetrack after the fair’s closure, a crucial factor in ensuring optimal conditions for the eagerly awaited horse racing spectacle. This Saturday commencement marks a return to a weekend launch not seen since the 1950s, injecting a fresh vibrancy into the festivities.

Despite the change in timing, cherished traditions synonymous with Opening Day will endure. The renowned Hats Contest remains a centerpiece, with participants vying for a share of $4,000 across categories such as Best Racing Theme, Most Glamorous, Best Fascinator, and Best Flowers. The day promises a thrilling lineup of thoroughbred races, headlined by the $100,000 Caesars Sportsbook Oceanside Stakes and the Grade II, $200,000 San Clemente Handicap.

Chris Bahr, Del Mar’s director of events and promotions, emphasized the commitment to providing a top-tier experience for attendees. “We want to make everyone comfortable and ensure a fantastic racing experience that day,” he affirmed. Anticipation is high, with general admission and The Party event tickets already sold out at press time, underscoring the event’s enduring popularity.

For those still seeking a memorable experience, several exclusive options remain available. Champions’ Terrace offers guests a deluxe setting in the air-conditioned Joe Burnham Lounge, complete with gourmet dining options and prime paddock views for $350 per person. Alternatively, the Opening Day VIP experience, located at the newly renovated Space Dust Celebrity Grill, boasts a Michelin-starred chef-curated buffet and premier paddock vistas for $400 per ticket. The Grand offers the ultimate luxury package at $1,000 per person, featuring bespoke cocktails, gourmet fare by acclaimed chefs, and valet parking, with proceeds benefiting racehorse rehabilitation efforts.

Off-track celebrations are set to complement the racing excitement. The Official After Pony Party at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa promises an evening of music, dancing, and culinary delights for $325 per person. L’Auberge Del Mar invites guests to continue the festivities with a post-race bash featuring live music and gourmet treats for $300 per person. Meanwhile, The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, in partnership with DerbyVIP and Wynn Nightlife, presents “Unbridled at The Inn,” an exclusive late-night affair featuring music by DJ IRIE and VIP cabana options.

Reflecting on the upcoming festivities, Bahr enthused, “Opening Day is always a party where people dress up to see and be seen. There’s nothing quite like experiencing the first race from the grandstand. If you can, grab one of the remaining tickets and come join in the fun.”

As the countdown to July 20th continues, anticipation builds for a memorable start to Del Mar’s summer season, blending timeless traditions with new experiences for all attendees.
