(North County Beat) – Nora Vargas, chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and representative for District 1, has announced her resignation, citing personal safety concerns. The decision comes just weeks after she was re-elected for a second term. Vargas will step down at the conclusion of her current term on January 6, opting not to take the oath of office for another four years.
In her statement, Vargas highlighted the challenges and accomplishments of her tenure, including her role as the first Latina County Supervisor and her leadership during pivotal moments such as the pandemic and disaster recovery efforts. “My priority has always been our community, ensuring that everyone can be seen, heard, and have a chance to thrive,” she said.
Although specific reasons for her resignation remain undisclosed, Vargas has faced health challenges, including vocal cord issues, and increasing tension at public meetings. In recent months, board sessions have seen disruptions, with heated debates on contentious topics such as immigration policy.
The Board of Supervisors will now decide whether to fill the vacancy through an appointment or a special election. Vargas’s resignation marks a significant shift for the board, which has undergone other recent changes, including the replacement of former Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.
