(North County Beat) – Tragedy struck early Saturday morning in Oceanside when a vehicle careened off eastbound State Route 78, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured. The incident occurred shortly before 9:50 a.m. just after the College Boulevard exit, according to a SigAlert issued by the California Highway Patrol.
Aerial footage of the aftermath revealed a stark scene: the vehicle appeared shattered, scattered across the parking lot of a nearby ampm convenience store situated at 3804 Plaza Dr. Responding swiftly to the emergency were units from the Oceanside Fire Department and multiple law enforcement agencies.
Initial reports from fire officials indicated that the vehicle had traversed through a homeless encampment situated alongside the highway. Thankfully, a thorough search of the area yielded no additional injuries among those inhabiting the encampment.
Details emerged slowly amid the chaotic aftermath. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle had been occupied by two individuals at the time of the crash. Tragically, one occupant was pronounced dead at the scene, while emergency responders rushed the other to a local hospital, their condition described as serious with updates pending.
Compounding the emergency response was the proximity of the crash site to a gas station, prompting concerns about potential hazardous material leaks. As a precaution, San Diego County HazMat teams were deployed to assess the area for any environmental risks.
